Singapore is facing a surge in impersonation scams pretending to be staff of major Chinese companies like WeChat and Alipay. These scams exploit fake subscription alerts to trick victims into revealing sensitive banking information, resulting in significant financial losses.
Since August this year, at least $9.6 million has been lost to these schemes, highlighting the urgent need for increased vigilance.
How the Scam Works
Scammers use sophisticated tactics to deceive unsuspecting victims. Here's how their operations typically unfold:
1. The Hook: Fake Subscription Alerts
Victims receive unsolicited calls claiming that their subscription to services—such as insurance coverage or WeChat—will expire soon. Scammers warn that fees will be deducted from victims’ bank accounts unless they cancel the subscription.
2. Building Trust: Identity Verification
Victims are asked to verify their identity and banking information to process the cancellation, often providing personal and financial details.
3. The Trap: Monetary Transfers
Victims are instructed to transfer money to designated bank accounts for "verification." Scammers assure them that the funds will be refunded after the process is completed.
4. Leveraging Technology: Screen Sharing
In some cases, scammers guide victims through WhatsApp’s screen-sharing feature. This allows them to:
- Increase victims’ bank transaction limits.
- Access sensitive information such as banking IDs, passwords, and OTPs.
The Singapore Police Force warns that this feature has been exploited to directly siphon money from victims’ accounts.

Protect Yourself
Scammers are becoming increasingly creative in their methods, but there are steps you can take to safeguard yourself:
- Avoid Sharing Personal Information:
Never provide sensitive details such as bank account numbers, IDs, or OTPs to unknown callers. Legitimate companies will not request this information over the phone.
- Say No to Screen Sharing:
Refrain from sharing your device screen with anyone you do not personally know and trust.
- Verify Caller Identity:
Always use official channels to confirm whether a call is genuinely from a trusted organization.
